it contains
Vaikranta bhasma (Fluorspar) is a combination of lime with fluorine. It is a natural source of fluorine, which prevents dental caries.

Sanskrit / Indian Name : Vaikranta bhasma
English Name : Fluorspar
Chemical Name : Calcium fluoride

Calcium fluoride (CaF2) theoretically contains 51.1 per cent calcium and 48.9 per cent fluorine, where the quality and quantity of fluorite is commercial use strength. It is referred to as fluorspar. It has important therapeutic value when used as a trace element. This natural form of fluoride is useful in arthritis and 'splints', helps to break up exostoses and indurated glands, and also strengthens teeth and prolapsed muscle and veins, to re-establish elasticity.

Yes as far as I can work out Vaikranta bhasma is Calcium fluoride. I read the clinical trial which shows the comparison study between this and another fluoridated toothpaste, as I'm sure you have too. I've also been searching for other papers, but i've failed to find any. So all the results are just based on this one claim, on a very small sample size (15 people in each group!!!). More studies would have to be conduced on a wider scale to further support the claim.

The difference between this toothpaste and the rest, well most toothpastes use sodium fluoride.

Sodium Fluoride has a solubility of 18,000 ppm, while calcium fluoride only has a solubility of 8 ppm.(1) However calcium fluoride is also able to bind to the teeth and deliver a therapeutic benefit (2).

The toxic dose is:

Adults: 32-64 mg/kg

Children: 16 mg/kg (3)

I'm guessing you require a fluoride free toothpaste because you already live in an area which has water fluoridation above 1ppm, and so don't require any more.

I don't know the symptoms of fluoride poisoning because it so rarely happens. I myself grew up in a city that had fluoride in the drinking water. I don't think they do that any longer though. As the others said, a small amount swallowed will have no bad effects. It will go into the stomach where the powerful stomach acids will dissolve it. People have swallowed much more dangerous substances and have survived. Even children are likely to swallow some while they are learning to brush, and again, if the amount is small, it will not hurt you.
